Smoking significantly increases the risk of heart disease. Why?

Nicotine in cigarettes increases the heart rate and blood pressure which puts a strain on the heart. Tar and carbon-monoxide cause a build up of plaque which leads to atherosclerosis and loss of elasticity to blood vessels.

Secondhand smoking which happens when non-smokers are exposed to cigarette and cigar smoke, is also dangerous and can cause heart and overall health problems to those affected and especially to children.

It is advisable to quit smoking to improve one’s cardiovascular and overall health, and many different gums, patches and medicine that can help overcome the habit.
