Are you at risk for peripheral artery disease? Peripheral artery disease is when certain parts of your body (medically referred to as the ‘periphery’ here) do not receive enough blood. So, the lack of blood to the periphery affects the limbs in a way that can become possibly dangerous. But, it can also lead to reduced blood flow to other areas of the body such as the heart and brain.

Sometimes, there are no symptoms associated with peripheral artery disease and sometimes there are symptoms like leg pain, cramps, numbness or weakness.

The  most common cause for this condition is atherosclerosis wherein plaques or fatty deposits build up around the artery’s walls which leaves less room for blood to travel through, ultimately leading to less blood to be delivered to critical regions.

Some risk factors that are associated with developing peripheral arterial disease include:

  • Smoking
  • Diabetes
  • High cholesterol and/or blood pressure
  • Increasing age (especially being 50 years old and older)
