Diabetes is a chronic condition in which the body does not produce, or use insulin efficiently resulting in elevated levels of sugar in blood.

There are three main types of diabetes: type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes.

Type 1 one is also known as juvenile-onset because it usually appears at young age. Daily injections of insulin are mandatory to control the level of glucose and preserve life.

Type 2 is the adult-onset and non-insulin dependent diabetes. It is the most prevalent type and characterized by insulin resistance or relative deficiency. It is often related to excess weight and can be managed with a proper diet, at least for a certain time.

Gestational diabetes occurs in pregnancy and can cause complications to both mother and baby.
